Chapter 10

She took TJ for a picnic in the park. She was at a loss when TJ asked her to call Adam to join them. Cassie reminded him, she and Adam were no longer dating.

The next morning Cassie and Karen were putting the finishing touches on the decorations for TJ’s birthday party. When Cassie went back inside to get the other spool of tape, she heard the doorbell ring. She wrapped the balloons around her wrist and went to answer the door. It was probably Peter with the cake. It was too early for any of the guests to arrive.

Not bothering to look, she opened the door. She stared in surprise at Adam. He was dressed casually in black walking shorts, a black T-shirt, and sandals.

“Adam, what are you doing here?” Cassie asked, pushing a lock of hair behind her ear. She folded her hands together in front of her.

He held up the package he was holding, and she stepped back to let him enter. He stared down at her in appreciation. She was wearing a red two-piece short set and sandals.

Adam entered the house, looking around at the party decorations. He made his way to the living room, leaned over, and set the box down on the coffee table.

“It’s a birthday present for TJ. I wanted to drop it by before the party started. I won’t keep you from getting things ready. Tell TJ I said happy birthday.”

“Why don’t you tell him yourself?” Karen suggested, coming into the room. “He’s been asking about you. I think he’d like to see you. Why don’t you stay at least until he gets here? Then, if you want, you can leave before everyone else arrives.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable,” he hedged, looking at Cassie.

“Adam, if you don’t want to stay, then leave, but don’t let the door hit you on your way out,” seethed Cassie, stalking out of the room.

She was trying unsuccessfully to tape the HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign to the wooden fence when a slight breeze blew the sign down for the third time. The breeze also carried with it the fragrance of familiar cologne.

“Need some help?” asked an amused voice behind her.

She refused to acknowledge him. Grabbing the sign, she tried for the fourth time to tape it down, but to no avail. She slapped it against his chest, turned on her sandals, and marched into the house. She returned minutes later with a box of thumbtacks. Placing the box in Adam’s open palm, she stood back and watched him tack the sign to the fence.

“That’s what I call teamwork,” Adam declared.

Cassie faced him squarely with her hands on her hips. Biting back a retort, she left him standing by the fence.

Later that day there were a few tense moments between Adam and Peter at first, but they kept their distance from each other. Cassie was surprised that Peter didn’t even ask what Adam was doing there. He simply ignored him.

“Adam! Adam!” TJ squealed, running to his favorite person.
